he Bogambara prison is no more The government has decided to permanently close the country's oldest and the second largest prison established by the British colonial rulers in the 19th century. The 13-acre land of the Bogambara Prison situated in the center of the world heritage city of Kandy in Central Province is to be used for commercial purposes. The maximum security prison which once was used to house the serious offenders and the prisoners in death row will be closed permanently for prisoners from 01 January 2014. The prison, which has gallows, is one of the two prisons in Sri Lanka where the death penalty was implemented. Sri Lanka Prisons Department few months ago closed the Bogambara remand prison which was situated in a mansion of an ancient nobleman of Kandy kingdom aiming to conserve the historic building.
